Andrew Scott In Black & White: His Startling New Take On ‘Ripley’, Playing All 8 Parts In ‘Vanya’, And Becoming That Hot Priest In ‘Fleabag’ – The Actor’s Side

Andrew Scott won high critical praise last year for Searchlight’s All of Us Strangers. Andat virtually at the same time, he slayed London audiences with his stage performance in Vanya, a wildly original take on Uncle Vanya in which he played all eight roles. For his efforts, he became the first actor in a single year to not only win the Critics Circle Theatre Award but also the Film Critics Circle Award.

And now he is getting some of the best reviews of his career and lots of Emmy buzz for his performance in Ripley, the eight-part Netflix limited series from Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve Zaillian. Although it is a well-known property, from Patricia Highsmith’s books to the Matt Damon-led 1999 movie The Talented Mr. Ripley, this is an extraordinary new take on the character. Scott makes it his own in shocking new ways, not the least of which is that the whole thing was shot in stunning black and white by Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood).

The series has made Scott the center of conversation again, something this veteran British star is used to from such previous appearances as “the hot priest” in Fleabag, as Moriarty in Sherlock and memorable turns in the 007 film Spectre, WWI pic 1917 and numerous other portrayals on stage including Hamlet.
