In 2019, C.B. Stockfleth’s documentary A Future History Of: The Elephant 6 Recording Co. was made available exclusively on VHS, with fans required to “rent” copies of the film by mail. Roughly three years later, an updated version of documentary will receive widespread release; it’ll be shown at three U.S. film festivals and made available to stream online within the United States. Watch a trailer for the film below.

Now simply titled The Elephant 6 Recording Co., the film will make its world premiere at the Doc NYC festival on November 10, followed by additional screenings at the Denver Film Festival and Sound Unseen festival in Minneapolis later that month. The updated 2022 version of the film includes additional footage from Lance Bangs, who was brought on as a producer for the film’s re-release. The film is executive produced by Rob Hatch-Miller and edited and produced by Greg King, who were part of the team behind the 2020 documentary on New York’s Other Music.

The New York screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stockfleth, Greg King, Lance Bangs, Rob Hatch-Miller, and Robert Schneider of the Apples in Stereo. The official Doc NYC screening takes place on November 10 at the IFC Center in Manhattan. The film includes interviews with Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider, as well as cameos from Elijah Wood, James Mercer, Danger Mouse, David Cross and more.

“I had been making music videos and concert videos for our friends and decided to make a big six-camera shoot for an Apples concert in 2007,” Stockfleth said in a statement shared with Deadline. “I think Robert was impressed with how it turned out and approached me one night about what I thought about making a film about members of the Elephant 6 collective—at the time I knew nothing about them. He seemed to think that my small-town background, temperament, and persistence, along with his blessing, would allow me entrance to their somewhat secretive and protective world. And that’s how it began.”

Following screenings in New York, Denver, and Minneapolis, the film will be available to stream at home for a limited time. Viewers in the United States will be able to watch the film online between November 11 and November 27.
