Mini Bagel Recall Over Serious Allergic Reaction Fears

US

Gluten-free meal provider Feel Good Foods has voluntarily recalled its Plain and Everything flavored Cream Cheese Stuffed Mini Bagels over fears they may have been cross-contaminated with gluten.

An announcement was made on the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, which said it is cooperating with the recall, on Friday.

According to Feel Good Foods, the products “may contain undeclared gluten that may be present due to cross-contamination.” The recall was initiated after the company received “one consumer report of an adverse reaction to gluten.”

The FDA warned: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to gluten run the risk of serious allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

The recalled products are Feel Good Food’s ‘Cream Cheese Stuffed Plain Mini Bagels’ with UPC code 89903900283 and ‘Cream Cheese Stuffed Everything Mini Bagels’ which has UPC code 89903900286 and covers products with best by dates “ranging from 5/29/24 to 9/17/25 which is on the bottom of carton.”

These products should be “disposed of by those who have an allergy to or sensitivity to wheat or gluten.”

According to the FDA, these products are distributed across the United States and can usually be found in the frozen section. Photographs of two packaging designs were provided, both of which prominently feature the company name “Feel Good Foods” along with photographs of the mini bagels. No other Feel Good Foods products have been impacted.

In a statement, Vanessa Phillips, the founder of Feel Good Foods, said: “Once we were made aware of trace amounts of gluten cross-contamination to Feel Good Foods’ Gluten-Free Plain and Everything flavored Cream Cheese Stuffed Mini Bagels, we contacted the FDA and took swift action to voluntarily recall the impacted product.

“As a founder who is personally affected by celiac disease, ensuring the integrity and safety of our gluten-free products is of the utmost importance. We take the health and safety of our consumers extremely seriously.”

Newsweek contacted Feel Good Foods by email at 3:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. This article will be updated if they wish to comment further.

Also on Friday the FDA announced the recall of 20-ounce packages of King Kullen Broccoli Cutlets with Bread Crumbs and Parmesan, produced by Gracie’s Kitchens of New Haven, Connecticut. The agency said this is “because they may contain undeclared sesame and wheat” which could cause allergic reactions in some consumers.

On Wednesday the FDA released a statement saying 43 cases of Kowalski Simply Sides—Jack’s Potato Salad, produced by Home Style Foods, were being recalled due to “an incorrect label resulting in an undeclared egg allergen.” The products in question were distributed from 25 stores in Michigan.

On April 9 the FDA published a recall announcement for 4-ounce packages of Ice Cream Sandwiches and 5-liter containers and 4.75-liter pans of Gelato produced by Belgian Yummies of Fort Myers, Florida. This was because the packaging did not clearly note “the presence of wheat, soy, egg, coconut and/or peanuts and FD&C Yellow #5.”
