New affordable housing apartment complex opens in southwest Austin

US

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) celebrated the grand opening of The Markson, a complex with 330 units to house mixed-income families, on Tuesday.

The Markson is located at 5313 Vega Avenue. More than half of the units will be reserved for residents earning 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) in Austin, according to a press release from the NPR Group.

“Here on Southwest Parkway, there’s a tremendous amount of commercial and residential space going in,” President and CEO of HACA Michael Gerber said. “That’s exciting, but so little of it is available to those who need affordable housing. That’s what we’re doing here. Be a safe place for people to call home with wonderful amenities, wonderful services, and a connectivity to the broader community.”

According to the release, more developments are underway around the city. The complex grew from Dan Markson who had a vision for affordable housing.

“Through his tireless efforts, bold leadership, and brilliant partnership development, Dan Markson changed the affordable housing landscape, leading to the creation of over 29,000 multifamily units in Texas, with more to come,” the release said.

Residents at The Markson will have access to a scenic nature trail, reservoir, the nearby Barton Creek Greenbelt, and over 20 acres of preserved nature area. There is also a variety of amenities including a pet spa, fitness center, and game room.
