‘The Daily Show’ To Return Mid-October With Guest Hosts; Permanent Host Expected To Start In 2024

After the majority of late-night shows revealed that they were returning next week, The Daily Show has set its own plan.

The Comedy Central series will return on Monday October 16 with guest hosts for the rest of 2023.

A new, permanent host is expected to take over in 2024.

The Daily Show faces a unique set of challenges after the writers strike ended given that Trevor Noah left last year and was initially replaced by a rotating set of guest hosts.

The likes of Leslie Jones, Wanda Sykes, DL Hughley, Chelsea Handler, Hasan Minhaj, Marlon Wayans, Kal Penn, Al Franken and John Leguizamo guest hosted as did Daily Show correspondents Roy Wood Jr., Jordan Klepper and Desi Lydic, who was the last host before the writers strike commenced.

Comedy Central did not reveal who will be hosting the first week back but correspondent Dulcé Sloan was set to host the first week of May.

She was set to be followed by Michael Kosta, Charlamagne Tha God, a combined news team takeover, Michelle Wolf, Ronny Chieng, Lewis Black and Desus Nice so it’s a good guess that some of them will get a chance.

There has been no decision on a new permanent host. There’s been plenty of speculation as to a shortlist and while there are obviously some favorites in the running from those working on the show and within Paramount, we understand that this is still pending.

Jen Flanz serves as showrunner, writer and exec producer of The Daily Show with Ramin Hedayati, Justin Melkmann and Zhubin Parang as co-exec producers. Dan Amira is head writer.

Deadline revealed in October that the late-night show was considering hosting duos and trios, with the likes of Wood and Lydic being talked up as potential candidates. We also heard that the network was considering one of the guest hosts to take over on a permanent basis.
