Roman Anthony has experienced a meteoric rise in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) this year.

He put on a show and won MLB’s inaugural All-Star Futures Skills Showcase in July. Less than one month later, Anthony was promoted to Triple-A Worcester after playing less than 100 total games at Double-A Portland. Then, earlier this month, the 20-year-old was named MLB’s No. 1 prospect by Baseball America.

To top things off, with one game left in Worcester’s regular season, Anthony owns a 1.000 OPS through 34 contests with the club.

To say he’s excelled at MiLB’s highest level would be an understatement.

The outfielder has been the WooSox’ leadoff hitter since being promoted. In that role, Anthony has consistently proven why he’s baseball’s top prospect. He is averaging .352 at the Triple-A level with a .469 on-base percentage.

Worcester manager Chad Tracy recently raved about Anthony and offered insight into what it’s like coaching one of baseball’s best budding stars.

“He’s just really good; you’re talking about the top prospect in baseball,” Tracy said earlier this week. “He’s just good, a really good defender, plays all three spots in the outfield, he can hit, he can hit for power, he can hit line to line.

“He’s just a good player. So guys like him, you get him here, you get him in the lineup, teach him little things as you go. We’re trying to teach him all the little intricacies that will pop up in the majors.”

The Red Sox’ 79th overall pick in 2022 has scored 33 times, drawn 30 walks, and driven in 20 runs since his promotion on Aug. 11. Anthony has stolen five bases and logged 15 extra-base hits over that span, proving to be a menace on the basepaths against other top MLB prospects.

Facing the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday, he walked four times in Worcester’s 4-1 victory to kickstart what could be the team’s final series of the season. Then, on Saturday, he drove in the first run of the WooSox’ eventual 4-3 win with a RBI single in the third inning.

Although Anthony has only played one month’s worth of games at Triple-A, it’s easy to imagine what he’ll look like contributing to the major league club in Boston. With nine games remaining on the Red Sox’ schedule and their playoff hopes almost entirely diminished, the team could give Anthony a taste of the majors while the stakes aren’t high.

Whether he debuts this year or next, Boston fans can envision a bright future for the Red Sox that features a shining star in Anthony.
