Sen. Warren leads Republican challenger John Deaton 58 percent to 32 percent, according to a recent poll of likely voters.

A new poll shows Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat running for a third term in the U.S. Senate, holds a double-digit lead over Republican challenger John Deaton in the Massachusetts race for the U.S. Senate.

On Thursday, the University of New Hampshire Survey Center released its Bay State Poll, showing 58 percent of likely voters plan to cast their ballots for Warren in November, while 32 percent said they would vote for Deaton.

“Incumbent Senator Elizabeth Warren holds a comfortable lead over Republican nominee John Deaton in the race for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. Warren is only somewhat popular in Massachusetts while large numbers are unfamiliar with Deaton,” researchers wrote in the poll.

Deaton, 56, is an attorney living in Bolton and a former U.S. Marine. Originally from Detroit, Deaton graduated from Eastern Michigan University and Boston’s New England School of Law. His campaign says he is “embracing a moderate approach in the U.S. Senate run against Elizabeth Warren.”

The Bay State Poll, part of the university’s States of Opinion Project, also found that 92 percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Independents support Warren, while 91 percent of Republicans support Deaton.

According to the poll, 46 percent of respondents said they had a favorable opinion of Warren, 35 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of her, and 18 percent were neutral.

However, just a quarter of likely voters said they had a favorable opinion of Deaton, while 18 percent had an unfavorable opinion. Forty-two percent of respondents said they didn’t know enough about Deaton to form an opinion, and 15 percent said they were neutral.

Among voters who support Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, 86 percent support Warren, while 8 percent support Deaton. Among voters who support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, 84 percent support Deaton, while 10 percent support Warren.

Regarding statewide ballot questions, likely voters are largely supportive of Questions 1, 3, 4, and 5, while many are divided on Question 2, which would eliminate MCAS as a high school graduation requirement.

The poll was based on a survey of nearly 600 people between Sept. 12 and 16 and has a margin of error of 4 percent.
