Series history: First meeting

Stanford storylines: This is a chance for the Cardinal to work out some kinks before starting ACC play. Stanford had a strong showing in the season-opening 34-27 loss to TCU, but there was a need for improvement in key areas. Offensively, that list includes stronger pass protection, receivers getting better separation, and running backs needing to produce. The defense must create more pressure on the QB and maintain its effectiveness as the game wears on. If the game goes as expected, this is also a chance for the newcomers to get experience, including QB Elijah Brown, LB Sam Mattingly, CBs Brandon Nicholson and Cam Richardson, S Jaylen’Dai Sumlin, TE Benji Blackburn, RT Kahlil House, and LG Ziron Brown.

Cal Poly storylines: Former Washington State coach Paul Wulff is in his second season with Cal Poly, which went 3-8 last year and started this season with a loss at San Diego. The defense only allowed 13 points against the Toreros and scored seven on a fumble return, but QB Bo Kelly threw two pick-sixes. The defense is led by senior defensive end Elijah Ponder, an FCS Preseason All-American with a sack and three quarterback hurries against San Diego.
