Refresh for latest…: Another busy weekend at the international box office, with strong holds across the board, and a major new milestone for Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Already the highest grossing animated film of all time, globally and overseas, the sequel has become the first animated movie ever to cross the $1B international box office threshold, now nearing $1.003B. Overall, it is one of only 12 films ever to surpass that milestone. More on that phenom below.

Leading all play overseas was 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Alien: Romulus which added $41.6M overseas in the sophomore session (-35%), and raised its offshore cume to $152.8M. Globally, the total is now $225.4M through Sunday.

Much as it did last frame, China continues to overperform on the Fede Alvarez-directed installment, sticking No. 1 and now at a strong $73.3M. It is the second-biggest Hollywood movie in China this year, behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Romulus has injected some much needed business into what has been a lackluster summer locally. Maoyan is predicting a $114M market finish.

The estimated $225.4M worldwide is already 94% of the lifetime global cume of Alien: Covenant ($240.9M). Internationally, Romulus has exceeded the lifetime cume of A Quiet Place: Day One ($122.2M). Japan is still due to release in September.

The Top 5 markets to date are China ($73.3M), UK ($10.7M), Korea ($9.7M), France ($7M) and Mexico ($5.6M).

The Imax global cume is $31.2M, making it the 2nd highest grossing horror film ever for the format. This week it will overtake Prometheus for the No. 1 spot. 

In its third outing, and with many more markets yet to release, Blake Lively-starrer It Ends with Us again edged her husband’s Deadpool & Wolverine at international turnstiles this weekend. With a $22.3M session (-34%) in 54 markets, the romantic drama has reached $121.8M overseas. The global cume is now $242.6M, passing the lifetimes of Me Before You, Anyone But You and Little Women. 

Italy was new this session, debuting at No. 2 with $1.2M to overtake the lifetime of Where The Crawdads Sing. In holdover business, Germany remained No. 1, and the UK took over the No. 1 spot. It Ends with Us this weekend ranked No. 1 in 26 markets and No. 2 in 12. Up ahead are Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Denmark, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan throughout August, September and November.

The Top 5 hubs to date are UK ($20.5M), Australia ($11.8M), Mexico ($10.8M), Germany ($9.1M) and Brazil ($8.1M). 

Meanwhile, Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine licked up another $20.2M (-41%) in the fifth offshore frame, taking the overseas cume to $634.1M and global to $1,211.3M. The Merc has moved up to the No. 8 position on the worldwide MCU chart (having overtaken Captain America: Civil War’s $1.155B) and will soon pass Iron Man 3 ($1.215B) to land in the No. 7 slot.

Strong holds overseas include UK (-25%), Spain (-27%), Australia (-32%), France (-38%), Germany (-43%), Japan (-43%) and Brazil (-44%).

The Top 5 markets are UK ($66.6M), China ($58.7M), Mexico ($42.4M), Australia ($38.7M) and Germany ($33.1M).

Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 gruved up another $18.6M (-34%) from 84 markets with an international cume through Sunday of $537.1M. The overseas performance is above Minions: The Rise of Gru and DM3 at the same point, excluding China.

Globally, DM4 is approaching the $900M mark, now at $885.4M. Italy debuted at No. 1 with $6.9M and Greece had a record-breaking start with the biggest opening day of the franchise and the biggest opening day of the year. Also notable, the UK & Ireland enjoyed a huge 47% uplift on Saturday of weekend 7, benefitting from rainy weather.

Tops to date are China ($54.9M), UK ($53.8M), Mexico ($44.5M), Germany ($35.9M) and France ($30.7M).

As for Inside Out 2, a $9.1M 11th offshore frame (-35%) lifts the international cume to $1,002.7M with global now at $1.649B. The Top 5 overseas markets are Mexico ($102.2M), Brazil ($80M), UK ($72.7M), France ($62.6M) and Korea ($60.8M).

In new play, Warner Bros’ release of Amazon MGM Studios’ Zoe Kravitz-directed Blink Twice grossed $6.7M from 73 offshore markets, essentially on par with domestic for a $14M global start.
