Police were investigating over the weekend after a female dog was found in a trash compactor at a NYCHA development in Lower Manhattan on Friday, according to the NYPD and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The pup was found at 180 South St. after someone cleaning the compactor heard it, police said. They called 911, and officers rushed the canine to the ASPCA Animal Hospital for treatment.

It’s unclear how long the dog was stuck inside the compactor.

ASPCA spokesperson Alyssa Fleck said due to “severe medical injuries resulting in extreme suffering, she was humanely euthanized to end existing and ongoing pain.”

Fleck said the organization could not share any additional information due to the ongoing criminal investigation. The NYPD said an investigation was ongoing.
