It’s already a historic year for Bay Area women’s soccer with the debut season of Bay FC, and the U.S. Women’s Olympic team poised to win another gold medal at the Paris Games on Saturday. So it’s fitting that History San Jose has decided to honor Brandi Chastain, a legend in the sport, at its Valley of Heart’s Delight fall fundraiser at History Park.
From her days at Archbishop Mitty High School and Santa Clara University through two gold medals at the Olympics and her iconic, decisive penalty kick in the World Cup final against China in 1999, Chastain became synonymous with women’s soccer. Of course, she continued to play with the San Jose CyberRays and FC Gold Pride before becoming one of the founding owners of Bay FC last year.
Chastain won’t be alone on History San Jose’s medal stand, though. History San Jose is celebrating the 75th anniversary of San Jose’s first historical museum, and is also honoring Bonnie and Marv Bamburg, a San Jose couple that have been instrumental in preserving the region’s history and supporting its arts and culture scene over the past six decades.
Bonnie Bamburg was History San Jose’s first volunteer docent back in 1972 and was appointed to the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission by then-Mayor Norm Mineta. Marv Bamburg has put his architectural talents to work for History San Jose many times and has also worked with the Japanese American Museum, Grace Baptist Church, Valley Medical Center, City Lights Theater Company, Preservation Action Council and the Rotary Club of Campbell.

TALKING ART: If you’ve ever wondered how public art gets chosen in Los Altos, or what some of it even means, you should head to the Los Altos History Museum on Aug. 15. That’s when Maddy McBirney and Karen Zucker, co-directors of Arts Los Altos, will lead a conversation about public art and they hope that audience members come prepared with questions, ideas and even gripes.
“We want to encourage people to interact by sharing their ideas about public art, rather than just presenting information,” McBirney said. “Attendees are invited to bring their own questions and share their thoughts on what public art they like and don’t like.”
The discussion is part of the museum’s Conversations and Reflections series and is in conjunction with the exhibition, “Expressions: Multicultural Artists Showcase,” on display through Sept. 15. The upstairs Geschke Gallery will have video walls filled with images of artwork including drone shots of downtown Los Altos’ 13 pieces of public art. Attendees also will get a downtown public art map used for guided walking tours, which Arts Los Altos offers on the first Friday of every month at 5 p.m.

BOOK REPORTING: Santa Clara’s Northside Branch Library is celebrating its 10th birthday Saturday with a story time, photo booth and a book sale by the Santa Clara City Library Foundation and Friends. It runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library at 695 Moreland Way.
