Joni Mitchell Announces New Box Set Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980)

Joni Mitchell has announced her latest archival box set. The new, 98-track release, Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980), is out October 4 via Rhino. The collection features demos, alternate versions, and live recordings from the era that saw Mitchell release Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, Mingus, and Shadows and Light. Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980) will be released digitally, as a six-CD collection, and as a four-LP collection. The physical editions come with a book of never-before-seen photos, liner notes, and a conversation between Mitchell and director Cameron Crowe.

Mitchell began her official Archives series in 2020 with Archives, Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967). She’s since shared the series’ second and third volumes, titled The Reprise Years (1968-1971) and The Asylum Years (1972-1975), respectively.

In tandem with her archival releases, Mitchell has also been releasing box sets with remastered editions of her work. The latest collection, The Asylum Albums (1976-1980), arrived in June.
