One of late architect Charles Gwathmey’s first modernist beach homes is back on the market for $2.5 million in East Hampton.
Known as Sedacca House, Gwathmey built the geometrically sleek home at 19 Northwest Landing Road in 1967, three years after designing the Gwathmey House for his parents in the dunes of Amagansett — but long before his 1992 renovation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum.
It was the third home that Gwathmey, known as one of the “New York Five,” ever designed.
The midcentury slice of perfection has been preserved as a piece of architectural history.
That means there are no add-ons — and past renovations were overseen by Gwathmey himself. But there is a moveable Airstream on the grounds, which serves as a third bedroom, or guest house, as the owners have thankfully not wanted to tamper with the original design.
There’s also a pool. The two-bedroom, one-bathroom, 1,200-square-foot home sits on 2.82 acres. It boasts 18-foot high ceilings in the living room, a steel spiral staircase and walls of glass overlooking the woods.
The main bedroom is upstairs, while the guest bedroom is on the first floor. The home was built for graphic artist Joe Sedacca, who sold it to Paul Amador.
In 1993, Amador told the New York Times: “I feel like I won the lottery. I’m buying a piece of art for the cost of the raw materials.”
The current owner, film and television producer Justin Wilkes, bought the home in 2016 for around $1.75 million. Wilkes is the Oscar-nominated producer of the Nina Simone documentary, “What Happened, Miss Simone?”
As president of media and entertainment for RadicalMedia, Wilkes is also executive producer of “Hamilton’s America” for PBS and of “Mars,” a Nat Geo miniseries with partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment.
