CHICAGO — A car crash in Woodlawn that occurred just after a previous crash late Saturday night resulted in a 44-year-old woman killed and three others sent to the hospital, one in critical condition, according to Chicago police.

Police say the fatal crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, on Chicago’s South Side.

According to police, the male driver of an SUV and the female driver of a Volkswagen sedan had been involved in a crash and were both driving to the Third District Police Station to file a report. While en route, police say, they collided with a Chevy SUV.

The driver of that SUV, a 44-year-old woman, was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced dead, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released her identity. Her passenger, a 43-year-old woman, was also transported to an area hospital and listed in critical condition, police say.

Meanwhile, the drivers of the cars in the first collision who had been on their way to make a report were also taken to an area hospital. It appeared that the Volkswagen sedan came to a stop after hitting a pole, while the other vehicles involved in the crash also sustained severe damage.

The female driver of the Volkswagen sedan was listed in fair condition, while the male driver of the SUV was listed in serious condition, according to police.

Police reported no other injuries from the accidents, and there is no report of citations issued. Major Accidents is investigating.
