Car with no driver, two kids inside goes “out-of-control” in Cohasset

Two children sustained minor injuries Saturday when a car they were in rolled out of a parking space and, driverless, careened through a soccer field where kindergarten-aged children were playing sports. 

The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. Saturday, when the Cohasset Police Department received several 911 calls about an “out-of-control” SUV driving across a sports field at Cohasset Middle High School, police said in a statement. 

Police learned that a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban had rolled out of a parking space and down a steep hill before entering the soccer field on Pond Street where children were playing lacrosse. 

Coaches and parents got the kids out of the way of the SUV, but it did hit a coach, police said. 

The SUV drove through the soccer field, crashed through a chain link fence, crossed Pond Street, and eventually stopped in a yard near 150 Pond St., according to police. 

The two small children inside the car, who were in car seats, were treated on the scene for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital, police said. 

“Due to the quick actions of coaches and bystanders, we averted a major tragedy today,” said Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley in a statement. 

Photos showed one part of the fence around the soccer field broken and the car crashed into brush near a house.

No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation, police said.
