Recently acquired Red Sox INF Zack Short traded to Braves

The Red Sox traded infielder Zack Short to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash considerations, both teams announced Thursday.

Short’s time in Boston was short-lived — 8 days to be exact — after he was traded from the Mets on May 1, also in exchange for cash. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment Wednesday, following a 5-0 loss in Atlanta.

Short’s send-off marks the Red Sox’ fifth trade since the start of the 2024 season, proving that this Boston team isn’t wasting any time in an attempt to climb the ranks of the AL East.

Short made two appearances for the Sox, going hitless with four strikeouts and 7 at-bats. He played 10 total games to start the season in New York where he went 1-for-9.

While Short’s stint in Boston felt like fever dream, it comes with little surprise. After the announcement Wednesday that utility man Romy González would return from the injured list, Short’s status on the 26-man roster was thrown into question. While he added depth to a Red Sox team struggling with injuries this season, Pablo Reyes’s decision to remain with the Triple-A Worcester gives the team a more reliable option.

As for Atlanta, the Braves traded veteran infielder Luis Guillorme to the Angels Thursday, seemingly indicating the comeback of David Fletcher. Instead, they’ll give Short a shot first as they gear up for a three-game series against the Mets on Friday.

Following two-straight losses to the Braves, the Red Sox kick off a three-game series versus the Nationals Friday at home. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
