A 71-year-old Bushwick woman died on Thursday after a driver trying to elude police officers swerved into her and her daughter as they were crossing the street, according to officials.

Juanita Vidal, 71, was crossing Eldert Street near Knickerbocker Avenue with her 44-year-old daughter at around 5 p.m. Thursday when she was fatally struck by 2024 Mazda CX5 speeding away from police, officials said.

Police said Vidal was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her daughter was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where police said she remains in critical but stable condition.

Officials said the driver swerved into Vidal and her daughter as he was trying to avoid crashing into another car. According to police officials’ preliminary investigation, the driver lost control of his car while swerving, hitting the two women before rear-ending another vehicle.

The collision pushed that vehicle into a third vehicle, and the suspect fled on foot.

Police have made no arrests as of early Friday morning.
