A mother is missing after jumping into the San Joaquin River near Newman to help her struggling child, the Stanislaus County sheriff’s office said.
Deputies were called to the Hills Ferry area around 6:30 p.m. Thursday by a report of a drowning.
The woman and her 13-year-old son had both gone into the river to rescue an 11-year-old child, the sheriff’s report said. Both siblings made it out of the river, but their mother disappeared.
The search continued until nightfall and was to resume Friday morning.
On Tuesday, two siblings — ages 2 and 4 — died after being swept away in Mill Creek, in the San Bernardino Mountains.
