‘High-end,’ ultra rare pineapple coming to US

US

(WJW) – It’s being billed as an “ultra-premium luxury ‘designer’ fruit that appeals to high-end consumers.”

Yes, you read that right — we’re talking about a piece of fruit.

This week, Rubyglow pineapples, with their red, distinguishing shells, were officially introduced to the U.S. market. Fresh Del Monte Produce first debuted the fruit in China in January 2024, with demand quickly outpacing supply, prompting a “global waitlist,” according to the company.

This particular variety — a cross between the traditional and Morada varieties of pineapple — had been under development for 15 years, Fresh Del Monte said. It’s described as “rare” in the world of pineapples, taking about two years to grow on a farm in Costa Rica.

There’s also only about 5,000 available globally this year, according to Fresh Del Monte.

Because they’re so rare, there is also a limited seed supply. The time-consuming cycle is what contributes to a steep price. (Retailers are in charge of setting the prices, Fresh Del Monte said, though at least one is attempting to sell a Rubyglow for just under $400 online.)

“From the intricate growing process to the distinct color, sweet taste and elegant packaging — every detail of the Rubyglow pineapple is meticulously crafted to deliver a premium experience,” said Melissa Mackay, Fresh Del Monte’s vice president of marketing in North America, in a press release. “This exquisite tropical fruit is another gem in crown, and we are thrilled to introduce this groundbreaking pineapple to North America.”

Unlike a normal pineapple that consumers might find at the store, Rubyglow pineapples will be sold without their crowns, and come in “elegantly designed packaging.”

The fruits will be available nationwide through select regional grocers and online from specialty produce retailers. In a press release, Fresh Del Monte notes that retailers will set the price.

Only 3,000 Rubyglow pineapples are expected to be available in 2025. In the meantime, Fresh Del Monte has a waiting list for interested consumers.

Fresh Del Monte has created several new pineapple varieties over the years, including PINKGLOW pineapples. Released in 2020, the pineapples had pink flesh, and were billed as being sweeter than traditional pineapples. Other creations included extra sweet, Honeyglow, and Zero varieties — the latter being a certified carbon-neutral variety.
