Man fatally struck by Metra train in Des Plaines

DES PLAINES, Ill. — A fatal crash involving a Metra train caused some backups for riders on Monday afternoon. 

According to Metra, inbound and outbound Union Pacific Northwest trains were halted at Des Plaines around 7:18 p.m. after train #666 struck a pedestrian.

Authorities later confirmed that the victim, a 56-year-old male from Des Plaines, was hit by the train in the 1500 block of Miner Street.

He was later taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Shortly after the notification about the delays came out, Metra offered another update, indicating that the #666 train, which was scheduled to arrive at the Ogilvie Transportation Center at 7:29 p.m., was about 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule. 

Authorities have not provided details on what led to the crash and Metra Police are investigating the incident. 

Authorities have not yet identified the victim killed.
