One man died while another is in critical condition, officials said.
A man was killed and a boy is in critical condition after being stabbed by a juvenile suspect late Friday, officials said. One juvenile suspect is in custody.
Northbridge police responded to the Northbridge Town Common at about 9:30 p.m. Friday for reports of multiple people stabbed, said Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early in a press conference Saturday.
Early said multiple police units responded to a “chaotic scene,” where officers found two people stabbed. The victims were transported to UMass Memorial Hospital, where one later died.
The victim who died, a 20-year-old man, was stabbed once, Early said. Another victim, 17, is in critical condition. Early said he could not confirm the victims’ ages at the time of the conference, but the ages were later reported by WCVB.
After an overnight investigation, Early said a juvenile boy is in custody and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Early said he expects the charges to be upgraded based on further investigation, and said that the department is not looking for other suspects at this time.
Four people, all from Northbridge, were involved in the incident, Early said.
“This was an isolated incident between individuals that know each other,” Northbridge Police Chief Timothy Labrie said at the press conference.
Labrie said that while smaller crimes, like vandalism, have occurred at the town common, there have not been incidents “of this extent.” The Northbridge Police Department will expand patrols at the common because of the incident, Labrie said.
The suspect will be arraigned Monday morning in Worcester Juvenile Court, officials said.
An investigation is ongoing by State Police and Northbridge Police Department.
