US

The Washington men’s basketball team and new head coach Danny Sprinkle added a player from the transfer portal Sunday as former Oakland forward Chris Conway announced his commitment to the Huskies on social media.

Conway, a 6-foot-9 senior with one year of eligibility remaining, averaged 10 points and 4.3 rebounds per game on 54.2% shooting for the Golden Grizzlies, who as a 14-seed stunned No. 3 Kentucky 80-76 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament this past season.

The Naperville, Ill., native, scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting in Oakland’s NCAA tournament win over Kentucky, and had nine points on 4-of-8 shooting in the team’s second-round loss to NC State. He started 66 of 109 career games with Oakland.

Conway announced April 29 that he was entering the transfer portal.

MINORS

Jason Vosler went 2 for 5 with his fourth home run of the season, and Samad Taylor added three hits and the visiting Tacoma Rainiers survived a ninth-inning scare to beat the Sacramento River Cats 5-4.

Starter Michael Mariot turned in a quality outing for Tacoma (19-14), allowing no earned runs and just three hits over six innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked one.

After taking a 5-2 lead on Vosler’s home run in the top of the ninth, things got hairy for the Rainiers in the bottom of the frame.

Brett de Geus came on in relief and walked the first batter he faced and promptly allowed a two-run home run to Heliot Ramos as the River Cats cut the lead to 5-4.

After walking the next batter, de Geus forced Ismael Diaz to pop out, struck out Brandon Martorano and got Luis Matos to ground into a force-out at second to end the game.

• The Everett AquaSox’s home game against the Hillsboro Hops was postponed due to rain.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader June 19, the team announced.

After an off-day Monday, Everett (10-16) will travel to face the Vancouver Canadians for the opener of a six-game series Tuesday.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

AJ Guerrero went 5 for 7 with two home runs and eight RBI, but visiting Washington fell to Arizona State 21-18 in a wild Pac-12 game.

Guerrero’s second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the top of the eighth inning, gave the Huskies an 18-17 lead.

Arizona State responded with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Ethan Mendoza, to take a three-run lead.

Washington put two runners on with two outs to threaten in the top of the ninth, but Arizona State’s Ryan Schiefer got Guerrero to fly out to center field to end the game.

Braeden Terry went 4 for 5, and Aiva Arquette and Jeter Ybarra had three hits each as Washington (18-22, 9-15 Pac-12) finished with 22 hits in the game.

Nate Swarts went 2 for 4 with a home run, and Kyle Russell finished 3 for 5, but host Washington State fell to No. 6 Oregon State 10-6.

Joey Kramer went 2 for 5 with two RBI and Cole Cramer drove in two runs for Washington State (20-26, 8-16 Pac-12).

SOFTBALL

• Washington’s game against Utah in Salt Lake City was canceled due to rain. No makeup game will be scheduled.

The ninth-ranked Huskies (31-12, 13-10 Pac-12) will wait for their seeding for the Pac-12 tournament, which begins Thursday at Stanford.
