Tom Brady Finally Admits to His Biggest NFL Controversy

US

Tom Brady is arguably the greatest quarterback the NFL has ever seen. His seven Super Bowl rings are more than anyone else’s, his 89,214 passing yards are more than anyone else’s, and his 649 touchdowns are more than anyone else’s.

It’s hard to reasonably contend that Brady isn’t the greatest NFL player ever, but there are plenty of controversies that surround his legacy. One of which is in the infamous “Deflategate,” which stemmed from a huge controversy that occurred in the 2014 AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.

An investigation was launched after it was reported that the Patriots were using deflated balls in the 2014 AFC Championship Game.

Initially, Bill Belichick and Brady both denied any involvement. However, after a lengthy investigation, Brady was found to have ordered the deliberate deflating of the game-used footballs.

Deflating the ball allows the quarterback to have a tighter grip, thus making passes far easier. The result of the investigation was a four-game suspension for Brady, a $1 million fine to the Patriots, and the team also had to forfeit two draft picks in 2016.

Brady has long stated he was innocent, but the investigation has always led to accusations of him and the Patriots being cheaters. This was a huge part of the jokes that were hurled at Brady during Sunday night’s roast of the NFL legend, nicknamed “The Greatest Roast of All-Time.” The roast was aired live on Netflix and is now available for streaming.

After multiple former players, comedians, and actors all took turns throwing shade at Brady, it was his turn to get up and fire back. During his closing jokes and remarks, the former Patriots quarterback finally fully (jokingly) admitted to cheating during the Deflategate scandal.

Brady states, “Remember Deflategate? The NFL spent $20 million dollars and found that it was more ‘probable’ than not that I was ‘generally’ aware that someone may have deflated my footballs. You could have just given me the $20 million and I would have just told you that I f****** did it.”

Naturally, the joke and the faux admittance got a standing ovation from the crowd, which included former longtime Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Brady had already been found “guilty” during the investigation, but he never outright stated any wrongdoing. Last night was the first time that he actually stated he was responsible.

Many people have accused Brady and the Patriots of cheating, but last night was the first time that anyone has ever admitted it. Whether or not it was supposed to be taken fully as a joke, the Deflategate scandal can now be put to rest.

It’s not like Brady will be reprimanded any longer for a closed investigation. He is also retired from the NFL, so the league can’t go after him for finally admitting his involvement.
