After playing 13 seasons for the Patriots, McCourty was offered a chance to return to New England as a coach.
Jerod Mayo is getting the band back together – or, at least trying to.
As the rookie head coach assembles his coaching staff, the bunch is beginning to look vaguely familiar.
After hiring Dont’a Hightower as an inside linebackers coach in February, the Patriots welcomed Tiquan Underwood to the ranks as assistant wide receivers coach just days later. Then, shortly after announcing his retirement from the NFL, Matthew Slater was hired as Mayo’s right-hand man.
“One of Matt Slater’s number one jobs is just gonna be ‘Can we just make sure Mayo doesn’t say something ridiculous,’” Devin McCourty revealed on “Up and Adams.”. The former defensive back spent 13 seasons in New England, playing alongside Mayo for six of them.
Apparently, Mayo’s plans for a mid-2000s Patriots reunion didn’t stop with Slater.
“I’m old and washed up. He tried to get me to coach,” McCourty said. “That’s his thing with all the older guys. He said ‘I don’t know if they’re walking back playing but we got a spot for him on the staff.’”
McCourty, however, is just a year removed from the league and dedicating his time towards endeavors off the field in addition to working as an analyst for NBC Sports.
“Those hours aren’t meant for my life right now, not at all,” McCourty said.
The longtime Patriot has recently gotten the chance to reconnect in person with Mayo. The two caught up at the NFL’s league meetings in March, with McCourty offering his former teammate some advice.
“When we see each other we catch up on a lot of different things. What I see in the league, how things are going, what I’ve learned in my first year out,” McCourty said.
Ultimately, the 36-year-old is psyched to see Mayo take on a different role this year.
“I think he’s ready for it. I think he’s excited to get into football,” McCourty said. “Being a head coach he’s doing so many other things other than watching and coaching football … He loves ball, he loves getting to coach football.”
