CHARLOTTE (WJZY) — Police in North Carolina have issued a “severe alert” in east Charlotte Monday after numerous law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire Monday, according to Nexstar’s WJZY.

An original police call made over the radio on Monday, April 29, indicates at least two officers have been shot and injured during a barricade situation.

“There is an active investigation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive. Steer clear of the area,” CMPD announced on Monday. “Residents stay inside of your homes.”

CMPD said multiple victims have been transported to nearby hospitals in Charlotte and that “gunfire continues at the scene.”

Multiple Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police patrol units and Mecklenburg County Sheriff units were spotted speeding towards the crime scene Monday afternoon.

Many roads remain closed for faster ambulance transport, CMPD explained.

Transportation officials issued several closures, warning that public transportation riders should expect delays along bus routes.
