Next up for the Eagles is the NCAA tournament.
Boston College lacrosse erased an early four-goal deficit and outlasted Syracuse, 15-8, to cement its second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship Sunday in Charlotte.
Kayla Martello took six shots and delivered each time. Mckenna Davis added two goals and three assists, becoming the program’s all-time assist leader with 132. Emma LoPinto contributed three goals and two assists, and Shea Dolce made 10 saves for the No. 3 Eagles (16-3).
“Going back to back is an amazing feeling,” Martello said. “We’re just so proud.”
The No. 1 Orange (14-5) built a commanding 5-1 lead, but the Eagles regrouped and got their defense organized. Coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein said doing so allowed them to play more aggressively.
BC ripped off four straight, and the teams went into halftime knotted at 7. Davis then found Martello for a goal early in the third, and the Eagles never trailed from there.
Davis, a junior attack, passed Kenzie Kent to stand alone in BC lore.
“I love setting up my teammates to score,” Davis said. “I get more excited when they score than when I do. I love being able to connect with each and every one of my teammates. I think it just brings the relationship so much closer together.”
Syracuse only delivered once the rest of the way, while the Eagles added seven more of their own to seize command.
“It was a hard couple weeks, but we came out, and look at what they did,” Walker-Weinstein said.
BC became the first team seeded third or lower to win the ACC title since 2015.
This team is far from a plucky underdog, though. The Eagles have beaten the Orange six straight times and made the NCAA championship game six straight seasons.
They’ll learn their seed and opponent in the NCAA tournament May 5.
