BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Officials are assessing damage after a bridge on U.S. Highway 290 was shut down due to “structural damage,” Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2 said on social media on Wednesday.
“The SH 21 bridge over US 290 in Paige was stuck this afternoon. TxDOT crews will inspect the bridge. In the meantime, eastbound lanes of US 290 are closed as is the SH 21 bridge,” a Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson told KXAN in a statement.
Around 3:45 p.m., the agency said U.S. Highway 290 is shut down on Texas 21 after the bridge was badly damaged by a construction vehicle that hit the overpass.
The last update from Bastrop County ESD No. 2 around 7 p.m. said westbound 290 is now open, eastbound 290 at Texas 21 remains closed until further notice and traffic diverted to feeder road. The Texas 21 overpass will be reopened on a limited basis by TxDOT, the agency said.
Drivers should follow all signs and instructions from TxDOT crews, the agency said.
