Police in Oklahoma are investigating what they call a murder-suicide that left five people dead.

Around 9:35 a.m. April 22, police were called to a home in Oklahoma City on reports of bodies in the residence, Master Sgt. Gary Knight of the Oklahoma City Police Department said at an April 23 news conference.

A child called police saying everyone in the home was dead, according to officials.

When officers arrived, they found five people dead, officials said.

The victims were later identified as Jonathon Candy, 42, Lindsay Candy, 39, Dylan Candy, 18, Ethan Candy, 14, and Lucas Candy, 12, according to a news release.

Authorities said evidence shows that sometime overnight Jonathon Candy shot Lindsay Candy multiple times, killing her. He then went through the home and “hunted down” three children and shot them to death and took his own life, according to police.

“Nothing short of a massacre,” Knight said.

A fourth child in the home woke up to find the rest of his family dead and called police, according to authorities. Knight said they believe the child slept through the shootings and cannot say why he was left unharmed.

“We are shocked, and our hearts are broken; this tragedy simply defies understanding,” read a statement from Mustang Public Schools, where two of the deceased children attended, according to KOCO. “This is a difficult time for everyone, but I know our students and staff will lean on each other through this time.”
