Chicago police officer shot, critically wounded on Southwest Side: authorities

A Chicago police officer was shot and critically wounded early Sunday in Gage Park on the Southwest Side, authorities say.

Just before 3 a.m., paramedics responded to the 3100 block of West 56th Street for an officer shot, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The officer was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, fire officials said.

Chicago police officials are expected to give an update on the shooting on the northwest corner of East 57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue in Hyde Park, near the University of Chicago.
