HIGHLAND, Ind. — Longtime Northwest Indiana grocery store chain Strack & Van Til is being acquired.

Iowa-based chain Hy-Vee is buying out the chain and the acquisition is expected to finalize in early May.

Strack & Van Til, which currently operates 22 locations across Northwest Indiana, began in 1960 after Ernie Strack and Nick Van Til joined forces. Previously, the pair owned separate grocery stores in Northwest Indiana.

According to Hy-Vee, Strack & Van Til is maintaining its name and will operate as a subsidiary.

“As Northwest Indiana’s No. 1 grocery store, we know Hy-Vee is the perfect partner,” said Strack & Van Til’s CEO and president Jeff Strack. “With our combined focus on providing excellent customer service, taking care of our employees and giving back to our local communities, we believe this acquisition is a win-win for both our associates and our company.”

Hy-Vee is now a member of Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) which supplies Strack & Van Til stores throughout the area.

Strack & Van Til has approximately 2,800 employees.
