A mass shooting in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood left an 8-year-old girl dead and ten people wounded in a likely gang-related attack, police said Sunday.
A black sedan pulled up to an outdoor family gathering and several men sprayed bullets into the crowd on the 2000 block of W. 52nd St. about 9 p.m. Saturday.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released but police say four children were among the wounded, including a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy who were both shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Another 9-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to his finger and was also hospitalized.
“This was not a random act of violence. It was likely gang-related,” said Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome. “The offenders’ actions, make no mistake, are horrific and unacceptable in our city.”
Authorities said their ShotSpotter gunshot detection system registered 18 rounds fired in the attack. When police arrived on the scene they helped apply tourniquets and chest seals to multiple adult victims.
On Sunday, a 36-year-old man was also listed in critical condition after being shot in the arms and back. The other wounded adults were said to be in good condition.
Witnesses reported seeing two gunmen flee on foot following the gunfire.
An investigation into the the incident is ongoing and law enforcement is encouraging anyone with information to contact the Chicago Police Department.
