Chicago community groups stand against gun violence during peace march on West Side

CHICAGO — Community groups in Chicago took a stand against gun violence on Saturday morning as they took part in a peace march on the City’s West Side.

Over 100 people, escorted by Chicago police, gathered in Garfield Park as they called on gang leaders to enter a peace pact as warm weather approaches.

“We don’t want violence, we don’t want killings, we don’t want people to be scared to do things in their communities,” event coordinator Nikita Harris from the community service organization “7 Slot Platoon” said.

Groups made their way through a two-mile stretch in the neighborhood, either on foot or riding in Jeeps.

“Someone has to speak up and speak out to promote change,” one participant said.

Organizers say recent acts of gun violence in the city have inspired groups like the Westside “Block Club Association” and “7 Slot Platoon” to come together.

“Seven is for the seven slots in front of the jeep and platoons because our president was in the military,” Harris said. “So you know we have nice jeeps and we all want the same thing.”

Some of those who participated in the march held photos of loved ones killed.

Some involved in critical neighborhood resources also joined in, including members of the “West Side Drug Task Force.”

“Whatever is going on with their lives we can all join in and we’re ready to just jump in and help them get their lives back on track,” task force member Michelle Taylor said.

Organizers say they plan on hosting similar events throughout the city.
