AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) reported it broke two of its top busiest day records following the total solar eclipse that passed over the city on Monday.
The Austin airport said on Tuesday, April 9, there were 37,147 travelers, which was its eighth busiest day on record, and on Thursday, April 11, AUS said it saw 39,967 travelers utilizing the airport.
According to AUS, Thursday’s number broke the record for its third busiest day.
The airport previously said it only expected to break the record for one of its busiest days.
On Wednesday, the airport projected it would have more than 38,000 travelers, as well as an increase in the number of checked bags as eclipse tourists continued to use the airport to travel home.
AUS provided a breakdown of the traveler numbers leading up to, during and after the eclipse:
- Friday, April 5 – 28,112 travelers
- Saturday, April 6 – 21,093 travelers
- Sunday, April 7 – 28,010 travelers
- Monday, April 8 – 32,573 travelers
- Tuesday, April 9 – 37,147 travelers (a record)
- Wednesday, April 10 – 36,380 travelers
- Thursday, April 11 – 39,967 travelers (a record)
The current busiest day on record was Oct. 23, 2023, when more than 43,000 passengers were reported.
