Rain forecast for NYC region starting Wednesday through much of Thursday

Significant rainfall is expected to return to the New York City region late Wednesday and all day Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The latest forecast predicts about an inch of rain in the city and slightly less in the northern suburbs and northeast New Jersey. Long Island is likely to receive an inch to an inch-and-a-half of rainfall, according to the NWS.

“This one’s tamer than a lot of the other ones we’ve seen this winter,” said Bill Goodman, a meteorologist with the agency.

Significant rainfall isn’t anticipated until late Wednesday, with a low possibility of drizzle earlier in the evening. The wet weather could clear the area before midnight on Friday, according to the NWS.

The predictions follow a weekend of strong gusts and heavy rainfall in the area that led to some roadways flooding on Saturday.

There is currently no flood risk for this week beyond the potential for nuisance flooding in areas with poor drainage, Goodman said. He added that temperatures will also stay relatively steady.

“After highs in the mid-50s today, we drop to the upper 40s tonight, and then highs will only be in the lower 50s on Thursday,” he said. “So not much change in temperature and certainly well above freezing.”

There are also no wind advisories in effect, after gusts of up to 50 mph on Saturday lingered through the weekend.
