AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) — About a year after opening in Austin, The Kroger Co. will be closing its delivery facility and laying off workers.

Kroger said on its website that it will close its Austin, San Antonio and South Florida delivery facilities on May 25. The grocery company wanted to break into the Austin market with its food delivery model instead of traditional retail stores. It had 90 ZIP codes on its delivery route, reaching areas such as Round Rock, Pflugerville, Bee Cave, Hutto, Cedar Park and San Marcos.

The Cincinnati-based company operates from a leased 70,121-square-foot facility in Northeast Austin at 2401 Ferguson Lane. It’s unclear what will happen to the facility.
