The status makes it eligible for tax breaks and preservation grants

AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) — Deep Eddy Cabaret, a local tavern with a legacy spanning seven decades, has been officially designated a historic site by the city of Austin.
The status, approved by City Council during its March 21 meeting, will provide the long-running establishment — once dubbed “dive bar royalty” by Bon Appétit — with tax breaks aimed at helping to preserve it while also making it eligible for local, state and federal grants.
“I think I’m most excited about the notion that Deep Eddy Cabaret will be protected and live on, hopefully beyond my lifetime,” said Will Bridges, the owner of the building and the bar. “The motto and battle cry at (Deep Eddy Cabaret) is, ‘Long Live the Eddy!’ We can now keep saying that for a long time.”
Deep Eddy Cabaret, which opened in 1951, is located just west of downtown along the northern bank of the Colorado River.
