Oakland police chief: Floyd Mitchell, former Lubbock, Texas chief to be introduced by Mayor Sheng Thao

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Oakland’s new police chief is expected to be formally introduced on Wednesday.

Mayor Sheng Thao announced the hiring of Floyd Mitchell on Friday and will publicly introduce him in an event at 1 p.m.

After over a year without a named police chief, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has announced former Lubbock, Texas Chief Floyd Mitchell to the position.

Mitchell has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and most recently served as Chief in Lubbock, Texas.

He’s expected to begin leading OPD between late April and early May.

His exact start date hasn’t been announced.
