Two men barely escaped injury when their car burst into flames early Saturday morning near Irwindale.
Authorities say the men were driving around 2 a.m. on the 605 Freeway south of the 210 Freeway, when they smelled smoke coming from the engine. They tried to pull over to the center median, but quickly realized they had to get out of the vehicle immediately.
The men ran across several lanes of traffic as the car exploded into flames, authorities said.
Fortunately, they were not hit by passing cars and no other drivers were hurt.
Fire crews arrived on the scene a short time later and extinguished the flames.
