Taylor Swift fans scammed by deepfake Le Creuset ads

US

Taylor Swift is not endorsing Le Creuset, even though ads popping up on social media have followers believing otherwise.

Fans of the pop superstar should know that when something seems too good to be true, it most likely is — but that’s apparently not the case: Swifties are being duped into believing that an AI-generated promo for a giveaway of the costly cookware is real.

Deepfake ads of Swift being “thrilled” to hand out Le Creuset have surfaced on Facebook in recent weeks, according to a report published Tuesday in the New York Times.

Footage of the “Cornelia Street” singer is featured alongside images of Dutch ovens from the high-end French-Belgian brand.

There’s a call to action for interested parties to click a button and answer a few questions in order to take advantage of the giveaway. Users are then sent to websites mimicking outlets like the Food Network, highlighting news coverage of Le Creuset alongside commentary from fake customers.

Those who were conned paid a “small shipping fee of $9.96” for the cookware, which they never received, and faced hidden monthly charges instead.

Although Swift is selective on what she endorses, it’s understandable to see how some can believe she’s a part of the promotion for the pricey pots and pans.

A decade-old Facebook post shows an image of her sitting with the brand’s Round Dutch Oven, Demi Tea Kettle, and Cast Iron Skillet — which was reportedly a housewarming gift from her good friend, actress Jamie King.

Reps for Le Creuset said the brand was not involved in any partnership with the 12-time Grammy winner and urged customers to shop for their products on its official platforms.

Neither Swift nor her camp has offered any comment about the latest controversy.

But the 2024 Golden Globe Award nominee is in good company.

Fabricated versions of media mogul Oprah Winfrey and domesticity doyenne Martha Stewart have also reportedly been featured in the Le Creuset scam campaign, the Times reported.
