SAN JOSE — A motorcyclist killed in a crash last week on Highway 101 has been identified by authorities.
Forty-seven-year-old Leonard Melo of San Jose died in a Jan. 28 crash, officials said.
The collision was reported at 1:13 a.m. on southbound 101 in the area of Highway 87, according to California Highway Patrol officer Ross Lee. Melo was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson when he “lost control” of the vehicle and collided with the center median on the highway.
A 40-year-old passenger said he had been traveling “at a high rate of speed,” authorities said. Both were ejected from the motorcycle and fell onto the roadway. Melo was pronounced dead after emergency personnel arrived.
The woman had “significant injuries” and was taken to a hospital. Police said they don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
All lanes of southbound 101 were closed and traffic was diverted to Highway 87, according to Lee. The right lane was opened after 30 minutes while the rest of the lanes remained closed for around three hours until about 4:30 a.m.
