CHICAGO – Chicago police are issuing an alert to South Side residents after multiple people were robbed during meetups organized on dating apps.
Police said the incidents happened at the following locations and times:
- 800 Block of East 90th Street – Sep. 15, 2024 at 6:46 PM
- 800 Block of East 90th Street – Sep. 24, 2024 at 12:21 AM
- 8100 Block of South Marshfield Avenue – Oct. 3, 2024 at 6:00 AM
The suspects reportedly asked their victims to come to a specific address to meet up. In two incidents, an abandoned building was used, according to police.
CPD said when the victims arrived, the suspects would approach them before other suspects appeared with weapons and demanded the victims’ belongings. The first incident listed above involved a knife and the victim’s handgun being stolen. The next two incidents involved a handgun.
The suspects are described as two to three males between the ages of 16 and 30.
Here’s what CPD said you can do to remain as safe as possible:
- Always be aware of your surroundings
- On dating apps, take your time to get to know someone. Someone targeting you just to rob will likely push to meet immediately.
- If meeting a stranger, choose a public location initially. If you arrive and a location is not as it was described (residence or abandoned building) contact the person to verify address and leave if they tell you to go inside.
- Have tracking ability on your cell phone in case it is lost or stolen.
- Immediately report suspicious activity
- If you are confronted by an assailant remain calm
- Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)
- Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police
- If approached by a witness to the incident, request their contact information
- Immediately dial 9-1-1 and remain on the scene when possible
