There was perhaps no better place to be this Sunday than the beach.

Shirtless San Franciscans sparred for a few spare feet of sand on China Beach, sunbathers joined the surfers in Pacifica, and families pitched parasols at Alameda Beach as temperatures set new daily records in 10 different Bay Area cities.

Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far in San Francisco and Oakland, where temperatures hit 98 and 100 degrees. San Jose set a daily record for high temperatures every day last week except for Saturday, Oct. 5, with temperatures reaching 106 degrees from Tuesday to Thursday.

Much of the Bay Area was under a heat advisory during weekend, with meteorologists warning people to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms.

After the seven-day heat wave, the Bay Area is expected to cool down on Monday, with more noticeable drops in temperature on Tuesday.

“We’ll see the hot temperatures decline, and the marine layer will rebuild,” said Crystal Oudit, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Amid the record temperatures, Pacific Gas & Electric customers in Oakland and Walnut Creek reported power outages for several hours on Sunday afternoon. Power is expected to be restored late on Sunday night.
