JOLIET, Ill. — A 56-year-old man was struck by a car and killed while riding his bicycle in Joliet overnight in what police say was a hit-and-run.

Joliet police say officers responded to the 200 block of South Larkin Avenue just after 2:45 a.m. Sunday for a report of a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist. When they arrived, officers found the 56-year-old man unresponsive and lying next to a bicycle in the southbound lanes of S. Larkin Ave.

According to police, the man was initially discovered by a passing motorist, who was uninvolved in the incident and called 911. The man was transported to an area hospital by the Joliet Fire Department, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say a preliminary investigation determined the male bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle, which then fled the scene after the collision. Police have not yet located the suspect vehicle.

The road was closed while investigators reconstructed the scene, and the crash remains under further investigation. Anyone with video footage or information regarding the crash is urged to contact the Joliet Police Department Traffic Unit at 815-724-3110.
