DETROIT – The Chicago White Sox are in the record books.
The White Sox lost for the 121st time this season after a 4-1 defeat to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park Friday night, surpassing the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in a single season in Major League Baseball’s modern era.
The White Sox looked to ride their momentum and keep their three-game winning streak alive after sweeping the Los Angeles Angels in their final home series of 2024, avoiding a history-making loss in front of their fans.
After four scoreless innings from starter Garrett Crochet, reliever Jared Shuster was brought in for the bottom half of the fifth inning and issued a walk to Jake Rogers before allowing a single to Parker Meadows.
A walk issued to Andy Ibanez loaded the bases. Rogers then scored on a wild pitch thrown by Shuster before Meadows scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Matt Vierling.
The Sox got a run back in the top of the sixth courtesy of a Zach Deloach home run.
The Tigers, however, answered with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a Riley Greene double and another wild pitch, this one from Chicago’s Fraser Ellard.
The loss drops the White Sox to 39-121 on the season, with a road record of 16-67.
The Tigers, meanwhile, punched their ticket to the postseason for the first time in 10 years.
