Nuggets newcomer Russell Westbrook talks playing with Jamal Murray

US

When it comes to the perpetual biggest question encircling the Nuggets’ championship hopes, Jamal Murray is a man of few words.

Will Denver’s point guard be dealing with any health limitations as training camp begins?

“No,” Murray said Thursday. “I feel good.”

Next question.

Murray’s standard operating procedure was curt and concise during his media day news conference at Ball Arena, and health is always a particularly tricky subject. He was determined to refuse injury-related excuses for his scoring inefficiency back in the 2024 playoffs. But others have continued to make them for him. Josh Kroenke lauded Murray in August for wanting to play through “some pretty good dings that probably would keep most people out of games.”

Kroenke’s comments apply to both the playoffs and Olympics, when Murray struggled for Canada. But while the 27-year-old’s percentages have been way down this summer, his dollars have skyrocketed. The Nuggets extended him for four years and $208.5 million in early September, a max contract that took a little more time than expected to complete.

That, too, Murray didn’t have much to say about.

“I was pretty confident (it would get done), man,” he said when asked if there was ever uncertainty. “Pretty confident. I’m happy to be here.”

“I think some things have been made of the amount of time, but I think it’s the natural course of negotiations,” general manager Calvin Booth said. “… Jamal has been fantastic for us over the years, and I think he will continue to do so.”

The Nuggets averaged 7.8 more points per possession when Murray was on the floor than when he was off the floor during the 2023-24 regular season. They were 13-10 in games he didn’t play and 44-15 in games when he did. Before the second round of the playoffs, Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards told The Post that “Jokic is the best player in the league, but without (Murray), they’re not a championship team.”
