AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the deaths of his grandparents, according to the Austin Police Department.

Chevy Kyler Monaghan faces a capital murder charge after police said he shot and killed his grandparents in a south Austin home on Saturday. KXAN has reached out to his attorney, and we will update this story if a statement is received.

Police on Monday identified the deceased as Anthony Maxa, 76, and Shari Mallory-Maxa, 74.

APD said in a news release that just after noon on Saturday, officers responded to a check welfare call in the 2300 block of Brookhill Drive. That’s near Menchaca Road.

Multiple callers asked the police to check on a couple. Police said the callers had concerns about someone named Kyler Monaghan who refused to open the door to let them see the couple.

Officers made contact with that person, later identified as Monaghan, in the home’s driveway, according to APD. Monaghan told officers his grandparents were inside “and were unharmed.”

APD said officers got a key to go inside the home and found Anthony and Shari dead in the hallway “with apparent gunshot wounds.”

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene and interviewed witnesses. APD said the investigation showed Monaghan shot and killed his grandparents in the home.

Online records show Monaghan was booked into the Travis County Jail on Saturday night. APD said these deaths are being investigated as the city’s 44th and 45th homicide of this year.
