Costo and affordable apartments will be housed under one roof in upcoming LA development

US

Construction on a new mixed-use building in South Los Angeles featuring affordable apartments upstairs and a Costco downstairs will begin this week with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.

The upcoming development at 5035 Coliseum St. in Baldwin Village will be the first of its kind to have a Costco as its anchor retail tenant in the US, according to its developer Thrive Living.

The “state-of-the-art” superstore will offer residents and locals “fresh produce and healthy food options, as well as optical services, a pharmacy, and delivery services to support the needs of local businesses,” the company said in a release.

The project will include the popular wholesale retailer on its street level with 800 apartment units on the upper floors.

The project will be the first mixed-use development in the country to have Costco as its anchor retailer, Thrive Living said.
The development will have 800 apartments including 184 for low-income households.
The mixed-use building will be located in South Los Angeles.

About 23% of the units — a total of 184 — will go to low-incoming households and the rest will be offered as non-subsidized affordable and workforce housing, Thrive Living said.

The project is also expected to bring thousands of new construction jobs to the community.
