A man incarcerated at a medium security prison in Bridgewater died after an apparent assault Sunday afternoon, according to the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

Staff responded to a medical emergency at a 47-year-old inmate’s cell at Old Colony Correctional Center around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, a spokesperson for the department said. The man was unresponsive and had “what appeared to be wounds from an assault,” the spokesperson said.

The man was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to MADOC. An initial investigation indicates that another inmate was involved with the assault.

The man who died was not publicly identified.

The investigation is ongoing with Massachusetts State Police detectives and Plymouth County District Attorney officials in addition to DOC officials, they said.

The death comes as the state is in the process of closing the minimum security campus at OCCC. The 70 people incarcerated there will be relocated by Oct. 31, the state said last month.
