Youth counseling center managers sentenced after defrauding Medicaid for $2.5M

US

CHICAGO — The managers of a suburban youth counseling center have been sentenced to federal prison after defrauding Illinois Medicaid out of approximately $2.5 million.

Summer Matheson and Terrance Ewing, co-managers of the Laynie Foundation, based out Matteson, were sentenced to six years and four and a half years respectively.

Employee Richard Grundy was previously sentenced to three years and one month after all three were indicted in Aug. 2019.

They were accused of using the foundation to seek payment from Illinois Medicaid for non-reimbursable activities; like internal case reviews, staff training, clinical supervision and recordkeeping

Matheson attempted to cover up it up by directing personnel to backdate and falsify patient records to make it appear that a licensed practitioner had reviewed and approved certain mental health services.

As a result of the fraud, Matheson, Ewing, and Grundy fraudulently obtained approximately $2.5 million from Illinois Medicaid and managed-care organizations used by Illinois Medicaid.

All three pleaded guilty last year.
