Several schools in Joliet have switched to e-learning Monday after a string of violent threats circulated on social media.
In response to the threat, all 21 schools in Joliet Public School District 86 will operate virtually Monday while the two Joliet Township High School District 204 schools will remain open. All students will be searched upon entry.
“Out of an abundance of caution, all Joliet District 86 schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September 16, 2024 and an e-learning day will be used,” according to a statement released by Joliet Public School District 86. “The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority.”
The source of the threat has been identified and has no credibility, the Joliet Police Department said in a statement posted on Facebook Monday morning.
The threat claimed that “All schools in Joliet will have 2 students with a weapon inside each school.” according to a post on the Joliet Township High School District 204’s website Sunday.
Despite no credible evidence to support the threats made against the schools, the Joliet Police Department said they take any threat very seriously as “as the safety of all students and staff is paramount.”
“The Joliet Police Department recognizes the anxiety that these incidents create in our community, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our schools.” the Facebook statement read. “Officers will be providing an increased presence around Joliet area schools during arrival and dismissal times. Residents are reminded to report any suspicious activity by calling 911 or the non-emergency line at (815)726-2491.”
